For a more academic look at independent film, the Wisconsin Film Festival held in Madison, Wisconsin boasts a wide variety of independent, international, and student film submissions during the four day festival. The Wisconsin Film Festival is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Madison Arts Institute and the UW Madison Department of Communication Arts. The Wisconsin Film Festival is in many respects, a low key festival. There are no red carpets, VIP access, or gala events. Instead there are lots of quality films; a typical festival has 199 films to choose from. In fact the diversity and selection is so good, that over 32,000 people attended the 11th annual festival.

What you can expect at the Wisconsin Film festival are New American Films, international selections from the Middle East, Europe and Asia, student films, and growing selection of locally produced films by Wisconsin filmmakers. Awards are given by the festival jury and by polling festival attendees. The 2009 audience festival winner is a Japanese film titled "Departures" by Yojiro Takita. Screenings are scattered throughout the university campus and downtown city. Ticket prices are also kept affordable with student and non student rates. The 12th annual Wisconsin Film Festival runs April 15th through the 18th, 2010.
